Measure A Forum – Transit and Schools

At the Measure A forum on February 23rd, 2008, we didn’t get much chance to talk about the relationship between housing, public transit and schools. With the challenges Alameda Unified School District is facing, and the need to keep our Average Daily Attendance (ADA) numbers up, we should be paying attention to this. The 2000 Bay Area Travel Survey noted that:

People living close to transit are likely to live in smaller households without children.
Nonetheless, such households still comprise a variety of household types, with almost 30% of station area households including children, compared with 42% regionally, and 10% being retired households versus 15% regionally.

So high-density housing in Alameda is not likely to greatly help us in getting families with school-age children into Alameda.
