Parks Tax Extension On November Ballot

Hot on the heels of the Measure H $120 parcel tax for Alameda’s schools, the East Bay Regional Park District has put a bond measure on the November ballot to extend Measure AA, a bond first approved by Alameda and Contra Costa county voters in 1988, and raise $500 million in new funds.

Although, according to a bond project list published by EBRPD Alameda is set to receive $13 million of the new funds, for Alameda Point and Crab Cove, only about $6.5 million would go to Alameda Point, for extending the Bay Trail while the former Concord Naval Weapons Station would be allocated $16 million to “Acquire open space and develop public access on former military base…in partnership with [the City of] Concord and the National Park Service.”

The $16 million to the former Concord Naval Weapons Station, and shortchanging of Alameda Point is a blow to Alameda residents who have long wanted a park at Alameda Point, not just new housing. Instead of a park, Alameda Point gets a trail extension. Why hasn’t Alameda City Council been pushing harder on EBRPD to commit funding for full-blown parks at Alameda Point?
