Whatever Happened to Vallejo?

Remember earlier this year, when the City of Vallejo was filing for bankruptcy? And parallels were being drawn between that city and the City of Alameda? Whatever happened to Vallejo?

A judge approved the city’s bankruptcy filing, that’s what happened. In this KTVU report, a U.S. Bankruptcy Court judge ruled that Vallejo is eligible to file for Chapter 9 bankruptcy.

The parallels between Vallejo and Alameda are striking – two small cities, San Francisco suburbs, that each lost a major military installation in base closures, both of them redevelopment cities and both trying to boost general fund sales tax revenue through increased retail development. Alameda’s Mayor recently proposed the introduction of emergency services user fees to try to stem the financial hemorrhaging, and, presumeably, to ward off Alameda’s bankruptcy. Vallejo is suffering a flight of police offers to financially safer municipalities, which may be fueling a spike in crime. As Alameda heads towards the bottom, might we suffer the same consequences.
