High Density and Number of Sworn Officers

The next logical thing (and easiest, frankly, because the data is already close at hand) is to examine the relationship between density and the relative strength of police agencies in Alameda and other Alameda County cities.

The table below shows a strong positive correlation between the number of sworn officers in a city and its density – for the Alameda County cities listed, and the city of San Francisco. (Police strength data for Dublin, CA was not included in the FBI’s crime report.) This suggests that for these cities in the Bay area, higher density requires a stronger police force.

For those who prefer a chart over a table:

We excluded Oakland and Emeryville from the correlation study because their total crimes per 10,000 resident figures are so high compared to the other cities. Oakland’s crime problems are unique, and we suspect a spillover effect of Oakland’s crime into Emeryville, which might explain their high crime rate as well. Further, the Oakland Police Department is “widely regarded as the most overworked and understaffed in the nation.”

This data would suggest that higher density development plans that further urbanize Alameda will require a bigger police force, at a bigger expense to the population.
