These pictures from the recent fires in Southern California illustrate why public safety is so important. Alameda has no sea-water fire pumping systems, and in the event of a serious earthquake, the water mains from Oakland are likely to be cut-off and there would be no water in Alameda to fight fires with. Yet Alameda City Council prefers to cut fire and police services and subsidize SunCal to the tune of $700 million to build housing at Alameda Point.
