Blast From the Past – Escape from Alameda Point

We stumbled across an old East Bay Express article from 2001, talking about the much-ridiculed proposal for gondolas to carry people from Alameda Point over the Estuary.

The gondolas, and their proponents, Alameda Point Community Partners (APCP), have long faded away. But concerns about transportation from Alameda Point have not. What’s interesting to note is base re-use manager Debbie Potter’s comments in this article from 2001 about the Webster and Posey tubes being insufficient to support the traffic generated from Alameda Point. Back in 2001, when APCP was proposing a mere 1,600 units of housing, Ms. Potter said “But if we’re going to build out the full plan – especially the commercial and retail – we would need the additional capacity.” But somehow, in 2009, with SunCal and their proposal for 4,500 homes at Alameda Point, Ms. Potter doesn’t seem to think we require additional capacity. Interesting.
