Sierra Club Passes Resolution Supporting Complete Restoration of Contaminated Property at Alameda Point

Earlier this week, the Sierra Club passed a resolution supporting complete restoration of contaminated property and creation of a national wildlife refuge at Alameda Point.

The resolution notes that “The United States Fish and Wildlife Service requested the transfer of property at the former Alameda Naval Air station to establish a wildlife refuge in December 1996” and that the Sierra Club has endorsed the creation of the Alameda National Wildlife Refuge.

The resolution “Requests that the Navy retain liability for residual contamination on the property after transfer to any entity”; opposes the siting of any facilities, including VA facilities or a community hospital at the extreme western end of Alameda Point; pledges to support legal actions to protect the endangered and other species at Alameda Point.
