California Least Tern Upsets Autocross at Alameda Point

In a communication received from Alameda City Hall, we learned today that the proposed autocross and drag racing – even the “test day” that Alameda City Councilmember Marie Gilmore motioned – will require a formal consultation with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service under the Endangered Species Act. This will effectively put a stop to autocross and drag racing at Alameda Point for now.

Well, that’s a shame. I should mention that I support the need to find habitat for threatened/endangered species, but as an auto enthusiast I must say that if you really want to reduce the number of street “racers” afflicting your community, you should help to find another site for these kids to do their thing in a controlled environment. As an example, I mention something going on in Orlando, FL:

Even though I am a sportscar fan, and have no interest whatsoever in drag racing, I feel the need to remind you that the largest sanctioning body for organized drag racing was actually formed *in* California more than 40yrs ago in an attempt to get such people OFF the street. Californians should be *proud* of that.

Considering that young people in the current era care as much about how their cars turn as they do about how fast they are in a straight line, the autocross option should be provided as well.

As I’ve commented previously upon your posts about this issue, denying people a legal, controlled outlet for this kind of activity will insure that you will be plagued with the illegal version of it forever.
