Alameda Point – Willits Cause Cancer for Future Residents?

No, that’s not a typo in the title. Some residents of Willits, California say that toxic chemicals, including chromium, used by a chrome plating company in town from the ’60s to the ’90s are to blame for the serious illnesses they are suffering. Alameda Point also suffered chromium contamination over the years from 1942 to 1990 that an aircraft re-work plating shop was in operation.

In this story, a UCSF researcher says “I found the people in Willits were sicker than the people who live in the rest of Mendocino County.” The researcher, Linda Remy, believes the Remco plating shop, now owned by Pepsi Americas, a Pepsi beverage bottling company, is to blame.

Un-related to the Willits story, but in the same vein, the San Francisco Chronicle, on March 2nd, reported on a Daly City housing complex where residents have reported a number of illnesses. The California State Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) has told residents that the chemicals underneath their homes are no longer a threat to their health. DTSC will eventually have to sign-off on the Alameda point clean-up as well.
