Demonstration Against Mayor Johnson Today at Noon at Alameda City Hall

Peaceful Protest At Alameda City Hall, Today, Noon, Monday March 30th, 2009

Residents of this island community are planning a protest here today at City Hall, in opposition to SunCal’s proposed plan for over 4,000 homes at the former naval air station, now known as “Alameda Point.” The protest comes as SunCal started collecting signatures for a ballot initiative that would relax a housing density limiting City Charter amendment, commonly referred to as “Measure A.”

“In 2006, Mayor Johnson campaigned with the slogan ‘Protect Measure A'” said Alameda resident and Measure A supporter Diane Color-Dark, “I’m shocked and dismayed that Mayor Johnson would now reverse her position and support a proposal that would diminish legislation that protects us from overcrowding our island.”

Last week, Alameda residents began receiving “robocalls” with a pre-recorded message from Alameda Mayor Beverly Johnson, encouraging voters to support SunCal’s proposal. The proposal would add over 10,000 new residents to Alameda.

Residents will hold a demonstration today at Alameda City Hall, 2263 Santa Clara Ave. at 12 noon, Monday March 30.
