Addendum: Respond to a poll about this article. We’ve received a draft copy of the report the Fiscal Sustainability Committee will make to Alameda City Council on Tuesday night. See it online. The City of Alameda released a summary report this week on SunCal’s ballot initiative for Alameda Point. (Incidentally, we don’t see any indication of who within the City authored this report – the Planning Department? The City Attorney’s office?) Despite claims that the project will be “fiscally neutral” the report notes that the plan will create a total annual shortfall against the General Fund of $17.7 million over 15 years. It also explains that City fee exemptions on the project that SunCal wrote for themselves will exceed $80 million. Next week, Alameda City Council will meet in closed session with the City Attorney to discuss anticipated litigation against the City – “Significant exposure to litigation pursuant to subdivision (b) of Section 54956.9 ” With the State of California threatening cutbacks to education funding, and local AUSD board members pushing for new parcel taxes, we can be sure that the critics of Proposition 13 will be heating up their rhetoric. But Prop 13 might not even be fully to blame for the school funding problems, and repealing it may have un-intended side effects. At last night’s school board meeting, the Alameda Unified School District Board of Trustees, by a 3 to 2 vote, approved as proposed by staff the “Lesson 9″ LGBT Safe Schools curriculum component. We reported last month that the East Bay Municipal Utilities District (EBMUD) is looking at a reservoir expansion plan that would flood an additional 1,200 acres of scenic Sierra river valley, and that EBMUD Alameda representative, Doug Linney, will be voting on it. It’s not only developments in the Central Valley that will need water – SunCal’s development at Alameda Point will need water too. And they may be counting on Doug Linney to provide it.
