City of Alameda Layoffs Confirm Dire Financial Circumstances Announced by Save Our City! Alameda in December

The announcement by the City of Alameda that they will lay-off 10% of their work force confirms claims first made in late December, 2008 by Save Our City! Alameda that the City is in dire financial circumstances. If the City of Alameda had acted sooner, and perhaps paid attention to our statements over the past two years about how a pro-redevelopment municipal government hurts the City’s finances, our City leaders might have been able to avoid, or mitigate, this mess.

In late December, Save Our City! Alameda began running on local cable TV stations the ad below, which has largely proved to be true – the City of Alameda has implemented fire service brownouts, and they are now laying-off firefighters. At the May 5th City Council meeting, the City Manager told Council that the net real cash in the City’s General Fund is only about $6 million, and the City could easily run through that in about ninety days. It’s an uncomfortable truth, but the City of Alameda is darned near broke, and our City leaders are now scrambling to respond.
