Author of Battle of Midway Book Interviewed on NPR

You can listen to an interview of Robert Mrazek, author of “Dawn Like Thunder: The True Story of Torpedo Squadron Eight” on NPR. Torpedo Squadron 8 operated from the aircraft carrier USS Hornet (CV-8) which was home ported at Alameda Naval Air Station during World War II.

Today marks the 67th anniversary of the beginning of the battle of Midway which marked a turning point in the U.S. war against the Japanese. Only Ensign George Gay of Torpedo Squadron Eight survived the action that day.

The USS Hornet (CV-8) participated in the Doolitle Raid just two months earlier and was subsequently sunk in October 1942 in the Solomon Islands campaign. The USS Hornet at the Hornet Museum in Alameda is CV-12. It was commissioned in 1943 and named in honor of CV-8.
