City to Close Alameda City Hall West

At last Tuesday’s City Council meeting, Interim City Manager Anne-Marie Gallant announced her intention to move city staff, including redevelopment services, public works and the fire marshall’s office back to City Hall at Santa Clara and Oak Street.

The announcement came during the discussion of what to do, what to do, with the vacant Carnegie Library building directly opposite City Hall on Santa Clara. Council had previously approved a plan to move the City’s planning and building services department into the Carnegie, but Ms. Gallant told Council that there is no question that within the next five years, the department would not have the necessary funding to re-furbish the building for use as a one-stop permit center, estimated to cost from $4 million to $5 million.

The City is working on a space plan for City Hall taking into account the recently layoffs of city staff and the plan to move City Hall West staffers back downtown, and integrate the redevelopment services and planning and building departments into a new Community Economic Development Department. Ms. Gallant doesn’t see the need to use the Carnegie for city staff space as she believes everyone can be accomodated in City Hall.
