USS Hornet Splashdown 2009, July 23 to 26

Next week, the USS Hornet celebrates the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission with Splashdown 2009.

The USS Hornet was the recovery ship for the Apollo 11 and Apollo 12 space missions. Astronaut Buzz Aldrin of the Apollo 11 moon-landing mission will be the featured guest speaker at the Hornet on July 25th.

Other special guests that will participate through the multi-day event include:

* Mabel Armstrong – historian and author of “Women Astronomers: Reaching for the Stars”, who will be signing her book
* Margaret Race – NASA planetary protection officer, who is working with the SETI (Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence) program at Ames this summer
* Bob Fish – USS Hornet Trustee, has written an excellent book titled, “Hornet Plus Three: The Story of the Apollo 11 Recovery”, and will be available to sign books during the four-day Splashdown event.
* Clancy Hatleberg – UDT-11 swimmer who was the decontamination specialist for Apollo 11 and first human to greet the astronauts after their return from this epic lunar mission
* Chuck Smiley – HS-4 helicopter recovery pilot for the Apollo 10 and Apollo 13 astronauts
* Bruce Johnson – HS-4 co-pilot of the helicopter that recovered the Apollo 11 astronauts
* John Stonesifer – NASA Director for the Apollo 11 at-sea Quarantine Program
* Don Blair – the only public radio announcer onboard Hornet for the splashdown and recovery of Apollo 11 and author of “Splashdown: NASA and the Navy”, who will also be signing his book
