National Night Out on Pacific Ave in Alameda a Success

Alameda residents on Pacific Avenue between Bay Street and Wood, recently beset by trouble from an alleged meth-dealing drug house, took back their street on Tuesday evening with a National Night Out barbecue.

National Night Out is a program that intends to foster greater co-operation between residents, police, fire and other community authorities to stamp-out crime.

The neighborhood children enjoyed sweet treats as well as climbing on a visiting Alameda Fire Department ladder truck, and learning about fire fighting from the Station Number 2 firefighters. Senior officials from both the Alameda Police Department and Alameda Fire Department were on-hand as well. As is the goal with National Night Out, adults came out to the street to spend time talking and getting to know their neighbors better and watching their children play together. Residents report that this neighborhood is experiencing a resurgence with many families with children and dogs frequently out walking, playing, and enjoying the tree-lined streets.

The evening was a pleasant turnaround from recent events when Alameda Police raided an neighborhood residence with a team of police officers, fire and building officials, arrested a resident for methamphetamine possession and subsequently condemned the house. Some residents, with whom we spoke privately, suggested that Alameda PD has publicly downplayed the level of drug activity at the house and assert that drug dealing at all times of the night was a genuine problem. Everyone we spoke to refused to speak for attribution on the subject out of fear of retaliation by the owners of the alleged meth-house.

The house is now boarded-up completely with several bold “No Trespassing” signs posted and neighbors look forward to the end of regular early-morning police raids – replete with officers in SWAT gear and carrying automatic rifles – on the premises. While anxious about the future of the condemned house, residents are delighted with the success of their first National Night Out block party, and happy to have taken back their neighborhood from criminal elements. They say they are already looking forward to next year’s party.
