Alameda Mayor Beverly Johnson Reverses Course on SunCal Initiative

In a press release issued yesterday, Alameda Mayor Beverly Johnson reversed course and stated concerns over SunCal’s Revitalize Alameda Point Initiative. Earlier this year, Mayor Johnson had lent her voice to SunCal in a pre-recorded telephone message to Alameda voters, and lent her name and image to SunCal for a mass mailing to Alameda residents.

In the statement, the Mayor is quoted as saying “…this initiative over reaches, usurping the City’s ability to negotiate a fair development deal that financially protects the City. After studying the election report, I’ve come to the conclusion that it is completely one-sided” and “if passed as written, this initiative will jeopardize the City’s long-term fiscal sustainability, which we are working so hard to preserve.” The Mayor closed with the statement “After thorough review of the measure, I believe that the SunCal initiative will have devastating financial impacts on the City.”

At the May 8, 2007 special Alameda Re-use and Redevelopment Authority (ARRA) meeting when SunCal was chosen as the new master developer for Alameda Point, Mayor Johnson motioned to appoint Catellus as the master developer, and the motion was seconded by Councilmember Frank Matarrese. However, the motion did not carry. After it failed, Councilmember Lena Tam motioned to select SunCal as the master developer, and the motion passed.

In late December of 2008, a group of Alameda residents under the banner of Save Our City! Alameda began running the following video on local cable channels:
