By Erica Madison Last week, the new Sunshine task force presented a list of public priorities to Alameda City Council; this is the first step in preparing a Sunshine Ordinance to be ready in September. The only obstacle standing in their way is in helping City Council remember what the purpose of the ordinance is. By Erica Madison “We’re looking at deferred maintenance”, said Vice-Mayor Doug deHaan. “What kind of budget do we have set aside for these major repairs?” The Fair Political Practices Commission (FPPC) has asked Alamedans Protecting Learning at Underfunded Schools (APLUS), the local political action committee urging the passage of Measure E, to produce evidence of filing their initial campaign statements locally. By Erica Madison Good news for park enthusiasts – over 12 parks in Alameda have been identified for a major overhaul; the bad news is, there’s no money available to begin even the most crucial repairs. The Sunshine Task Force will meet tonight in the Stafford meeting room of the Alameda Free Library. Thomas Peele, an investigative reporter for the Bay Area News Group will give a presentation. In an Alameda Journal Advertising Supplement from the Chamber of Commerce, bearing the slogan, “We Mean Business,” CEO Melody Marr writes, “Two years ago the Chamber was criticized for not taking a formal position on measures going before the various 2008 ballots….There are some issues that will be on the June ballot that may have the same impact…the Chamber is going through the process of reviewing all sides of issues before the Economic Development/Government Relations Committee…” Updated, April 26, 8:30 a.m. – This meeting has been moved to Tuesday, April 27th, 8:30 a.m. The Alameda Unified School District will hold a special board meeting tonight to evaluate the Superintendent’s performance. The evaluation comes the week after revelations of a lawsuit against the District for discrimination and harassment against a former employee on the basis of sexual orientation. Earlier today, Miss Alameda, Jessica Robinson, gave the opening remarks at an event celebrating the grand re-opening of Salon Marcello in Alameda. Miss Alameda’s remarks celebrated the life of salon owner Shahla Taj. Yesterday, Washington Elementary School received a charity “spruce up” courtesy of Comcast. The event was part of Comcast Cares Day, which saw more than 55,000 Comcast volunteers participate in over 550 community service projects across the country. |
