This year, Thursday, April 22nd marks Earth Day’s 40th anniversary. Alameda Public Works provided these fun facts:

In 1969, the year of the first Earth Day…

    • the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at a high of 838;
  • a gallon of gas cost $0.38 cents
  • the world’s population was 3.8 billion
  • The Public Works Department says the annual festival draws more than 3,000 visitors from Alameda and the surrounding area; this year, the Department is sponsoring a film festival about sustainable living.

      I remember gas prices at .35 cents a gallon. A service attendant would not only pump the gas, but wash your windshield, check the air in your tires, check oil and water and sometimes they had special gifts like dishes or drinking glasses and other little goodies to thank their customers. My husbands paycheck was $95.00 a week, I still have one of his pay stubs! Going out to dinner meant going to Mel’s Diner, but only on special occasions.
      Those where the day’s……..( remember Archie and Edith Bunker’s song?)
