Update on Alameda Firefighters Charitable Activities

Dear Editor,

The Alameda Firefighters would like to thank the Citizens of Alameda for help supporting our “Fill the Boot” campaign. We are proud to announce that we raised over $3,000.00 in a matter of hours for muscular dystrophy research. If you were unable to make it one of our two locations to donate, you can visit the MDA’s website at: and support a great cause.

Our next big event will be June 26th. Alameda Firefighters Local 689 will be participating in the Alameda Relay for Life in support of one of their own members who is currently battling cancer. The member, a Fire Captain and fourteen year veteran of our department, was diagnosed with Stage IV stomach cancer in March and is presently undergoing chemotherapy treatment. There have been several reported cases of cancer amongst the firefighters of the AFD within the last two decades, most notably the death of 28 year old fireman David Macho, who succumbed to Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in 1993.

The Alameda Firefighters have committed to raising over $10,000 for the Relay For Life event, with all proceeds benefiting the American Cancer Society, in hopes of increasing public awareness while standing in solidarity with their brother who is currently fighting the disease.

The event will be held on the track at Encinal High School, beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday and concluding at 10 a.m. on Sunday, June 27th. Local 689 and other participating teams will camp out at the event and have representatives walking or running around the track at all times, serving as a constant reminder that “cancer never sleeps”. The event is held to honor cancer survivors, pay tribute to the lives lost to the disease, and to raise awareness and money to aid in the fight against cancer in our community.

You can learn more about the event by logging on to the Alameda Firefighter’s Relay For Life web page at:

Thank you,

The Alameda Firefighters
