There is much talk throughout California, and in my beloved hometown of Alameda, about “transparency in government.” Many references to “Sunshine Laws” are made, and here, a “Sunshine Task Force” has emerged to discuss and establish a Sunshine Ordinance to strengthen existing transparency rules. Not every little dark corner of public service, however, is being shone upon.

Dear Editor,

At 50 cents per mile (the IRS reimbursement amount for personal car usage), Kapler is getting reimbursed ($250/month) for driving 500 miles per month. That takes him around our fair island city about 36 times per month, or almost twice a day per workday. That seems sufficient, right?

Over 50 people showed up last night at the restored art-deco theater on Alameda Point to hear a panel share what they’ve learned from the redevelopment of other military bases in California. Allen Michaan donated the use of the theater to a group of citizens holding a series of forums on “moving forward” with the redevelopment of Alameda Point.

Alameda has a bad habit of recycling incompetent politicians. City Council members term out and run for Mayor, or for the County Board of Supes. Every candidate for Mayor this year is recycled, and at least two of them are compost. But the all-time standout is AUSD Board Trustee Mike McMahon, running for a third term on the school board.

Alameda Unified School District Cannot Document Active Procedures to Identify Students With Disabilities

Over a period of 60 days, Action Alameda News made multiple requests to the Alameda Unified School District asking the District to provide documentation on its procedures to actively identify in-district students with disabilities, and documentation on its latest “child find” survey. So far, the District has failed to provide documentation.

City’s Attorney Responds to Lena Tam Defense
