Citizen’s Forum on Path Forward for Alameda Point Next Week

Next week, at the Alameda Naval Air Museum, a group of Alameda residents will host the first of what they say will be a series of community meetings to discuss the future development of Alameda Point.

Alameda resident and activist Gretchen Lipow announced the meeting earlier this week. Lipow and her husband, Arthur Lipow, run the Alameda Public Affairs Forum, but Mrs. Lipow told Action Alameda News that her husband is busy working on other projects, and it’s herself and other residents pulling this series together.

In a statement, Lipow wrote that the purpose of this meeting will be to review and discuss the previously published Community Reuse Plans and Preliminary Development Concept “that were developed by the citizens of Alameda.” The meeting is to include speakers, including Alameda Vice-Mayor Doug deHaan, and a panel session that includes current commercial tenants at Alameda Point.

“We do not have to start from scratch to develop a good plan for Alameda Point”, said Vice-Mayor Doug deHaan. “There is a master plan that was developed by the community and approved by the City Council and Alameda Reuse and Redevelopment Authority (ARRA). It is time to re-visit the plans to see which elements are viable for moving forward and what other elements the community would like to see included. The experiences of the last three years have increased the number of Alamedans who want to be part of this process going forward. Now is the time to bring all interested Alamedans together”.

According to Lipow, future meetings will look at alternative uses that have been suggested and reviews of other base reuse developments.

The meeting will be held Wednesday, August 11, 2010 at the Alameda Naval Air Museum, 2151 Ferry Point #77 at Alameda Point from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and all Alameda residents are invited to attend.

The speaker’s roster includes:

  • Doug deHaan, Vice-Mayor of Alameda
  • Nancy Hird , President of Alameda Preservation Society
  • George Humphreys, Past Chair of Restoration Advisory Board
  • Todd Roloff, CEO of National Response Center
