Alameda homes are being fitted with PG&E’s “smart meters.” The devices are being fitted to gas meters in Alameda; Alameda Municipal Power provides electrical utility service in Alameda and is not currently deploying smart meters.
Meters are being installed by an independent contractor, Wellington Energy, on behalf of PG&E. According to PG&E’s smart meter website, the natural gas meters record gas usage daily and transmit meter readings wirelessly. The meters are powered by a lithium-ion battery. PG&E expects to save billions in labor costs by eliminating manual meter reading through traditional analog meters.
