Yesterday, SunCal announced that they had filed a lawsuit against the City of Alameda under the California Public Records Act, claiming that Interim City Manager Ann Marie Gallant, City Clerk Lara Weisiger, “and other Alameda officials,” were conspiring to withhold and destroy public records that SunCal has requested as part of their U.S. Federal Court against the City. The City of Alameda responded by saying that SunCal’s charges are “demonstrably false.”

The Alliance for Excellent Education estimates that California spends about $135 million annually to teach college students what they should have learned in high school. Among the many other courses I taught at UC Santa Barbara and Westmont College — including Shakespeare and Bible Lit — I also taught remedial English composition classes for many years, so I saw the problem up close.

At a joint meeting on Saturday morning, Alameda City Council and the Alameda Unified School District (AUSD) Board of Trustees both agreed to pursue two separate recommendations from Interim City Manager Ann Marie Gallant that would provide operational funding for AUSD schools, and stopgap funding to keep the Woodstock Child Development Center (WCDC) programs running at least until the end of the year.

Tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m., a joint Alameda City Council and Alameda Unified School District (AUSD) Board of Trustees meeting is set to take place at AUSD’s district offices. In addition to a proposal to convert redevelopment property tax dollars to operational funds for Alameda Schools, Interim City Manager Ann Marie Gallant is expected to present ideas on how the City of Alameda might help find funding for the Woodstock Child Development Center programs which are at risk of being discontinued due to State budget cuts.

Alameda City Councilmember Lena Tam has apparently filed a claim with the City of Alameda to have the City reimburse her for legal fees incurred in her defense of the allegations of misconduct against her. Apparently as a result of that claim, the City of Alameda, and subsequently, through a public records request, Action Alameda News, have acquired a copy of an August 12th, 2010 letter from Tam’s attorney to the District Attorney – one that the D.A. previously refused to release either to the City or to this publication – and a copy of the letter that City of Alameda Special Counsel Michael Colontuono sent in response.
