Alameda City Council Unanimously Approves Recommendation to Pursue Long-term Lease Agreement with AUSD for Recreational Facilities

At an Alameda City Council meeting on Wednesday night, Council unanimously approved a recommendation that gives direction to the Interim City Manager to negotiate a long-term lease with the Alameda Unified School District to run and maintain recreational facilities, including the Kofman Auditorium and Alameda High and Encinal High swimming pools, owned by the District.

Interim City Manager Ann Marie Gallant told City Council that the District would retain priority for use of District-owned facilities. Ms. Gallant said that she believes the District is motivated to more aggressively rent facilities like the Kofman Auditorum by the need to generate revenues for its general fund. She also said that the key is to better utilize recreational facilities in the City, and that the City of Alameda, through its own programs and partnership programs with non-profits, would be better able to fill facilities like the Kofman when the District doesn’t need it for the benefit of students. Additionally, Gallant said, the City, through the Recreation and Parks Department, is well-versed in the management of reservations and bookings for recreational space, something that is not necessarily part of AUSD’s core services.

Council gave the go-ahead to Gallant to begin negotiations with the school district, and clearly inventory all the facilities to be covered in any long-term lease.

Something many of us who are so skeptical of AUSD can support.

Now let’s see if all those Newbies calling for the firing of Gallant, like Jon Spangler, will keep up their vicious attacks. Or whether they can get with the program, even if it doesn’t involve Lena Tam and SunCal/Calthorpe…
