School District to Vote on 32 cent/sq ft Parcel Tax Tomorrow Night

Correction: Tomorrow’s night meeting is for the Board to give direction – the actual vote is to take place November 30th.

Tomorrow night, the Alameda Unified School District Board of Trustees will vote on a recommendation from the Superintendent to place a parcel tax on the ballot in a March 8, 2011 special election. The recommendation is for a tax based on 32 cents per square feet of building improvements on a parcel, with an $8,500 cap, which equates to a tax only on the first 26,560 square feet of building improvements on a parcel.

The District hopes to raise $12.3 million per year with the tax; the 32 cents per square foot tax rate would be applied to both residential and commercial parcels. The proposed ballot language in the Superintendent’s recommendation, by specifying that the tax is to be collected in the same manner as ad valorem property taxes, will exempt private religious schools in Alameda, like St. Joseph’s and St. Philip Neri, from having to pay the parcel tax.

AUSD expects that the special election will cost between $5 and $7 per registered voter, or, at most, just under $300,000 based on 42,000 registered voters in Alameda.
