County Sets Dates for “Measure A” AUSD Parcel Tax Election

The Alameda County Registrar of Voters has published a list of important dates pertaining to Alameda Unified School District’s special election to consider a parcel tax on March 8th, 2011.

The District says it needs the tax to raise roughly $84 million over seven years to keep from consolidating elementary schools and to retain quality teachers. Opponents, who have formed the Committee Against Measure A to fight the ballot measure, say that a $7,999 annual tax cap makes the measure unfair, and allows big businesses in Alameda to pay as low as 1 cent per square foot of building improvements while most people will pay 32 cents per square foot.

The Alameda County Registrar of Voters has recorded the measure submitted to it by AUSD and set the following dates leading up to the election:

  • First day to mail sample ballots – Thursday, January 27, 2011
  • Early Voting will begin on Monday, February 7, 2011
  • Close of Voter Registration Period – Monday, February 21, 2011
  • Last day to request a Vote By Mail Ballot – Tuesday, March 1, 2011

This will be a normal “in-person” election, not a vote-by-mail only election. Polls will be open on election day from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
