Alameda Municipal Power to Issue RFP for Study of Electricity Rates and Technology Trends

Tonight at the Public Utilities Board meeting, Alameda Municipal Power staff will ask for input from board members on a Request for Proposal (RFP) they want to issue to study emerging trends in electricity rates and electrical utility technologies. The staff report cites “Smart Meters” as a new technology that provides new pricing options for utilities. To date, only PG&E has deployed smart meters in Alameda.

The staff report also notes that widespread use of electric vehicles could significantly add to customers’ use of electricity, increasing demand but stressing the utility’s distribution system if charging takes place during peak evening periods.

Staff also wants to update the utility’s cost of service model, which they say was originally developed in the 1980s and periodically updated. The utility now wants expert assistance to evaluate tools or programs that would help them update their model.

While budgeted, the estimated actual cost of the study has not yet been determined; AMP estimates that the actual expenses would be incurred in the next fiscal year.

The board meets tonight at 7:00 p.m. at Alameda City Council chambers at City Hall.
