City of Alameda to Buy John Patrick’s Bar

Next Tuesday, Alameda City Council will consider a resolution authorizing the city manager to purchase John Patrick’s Bar at 1813 Park Street, which has gone into tax default. The City plans to buy the property for the price of the defaulted taxes and fees which amounts to $11,772 for “economic development purposes.”

Oakland City Attorney John Russo Set to be Named Alameda City Manager

Agenda documents for next week’s City Council meeting show that the City of Alameda is set to appoint Oakland City Attorney John Russo as Alameda’s latest City Manager. In last year’s council election, Russo contributed money to Mayor Marie Gilmore’s campaign as well as Councilmembers Rob Bonta’s and Lena Tam’s campaign. Recently, this publication ran a photo series showing Russo at an election night party for the same three candidates.

Jessica Robinson to Help Raise Awareness of Breast Cancer though Orange County Pageant

Jessica Robinson, an Alameda resident and actor who has participated multiple times in the Miss California USA pageant as “Miss Alameda,” will participate this year in the “Real Crown Champion: Ms. and Mrs. Orange County Regional Pageant” which raises funds for the Susan G Komen for the Cure foundation, which fights breast cancer. Robinson was was called by pageant organizers and invited to participate.

Former Fire Chief David Kapler Lawsuit Against the City of Alameda

Correction: A closer reading of the complaint reveals that Kapler is in fact claiming $4 million in damages – $2 million for general damages to his reputation and $2 million in special damages. See items 81 and 82 in the claim, below.

On April 14th, former Alameda Fire Chief David Kapler filed a lawsuit against the City of Alameda, and others, for wrongful termination, breach of contract, defamation and other causes, over his dismissal from the City of Alameda late last year. In his complaint, among other allegations, Kapler alleges that Alameda City Councilmember Lena Tam “conspired with members of the firefighter’s union to wrongfully” terminate him. He further alleges that Lena Tam attempted to coerce then-Interim City Manager Ann Marie Gallant to terminate him without good cause. Kapler is claiming $2 million $4 million in damages.

Murder on Buena Vista

Alameda police responding to reports of a disturbance on the 500 block of Buena Vista Avenue just before noon this morning arrived to find an adult male dead, apparently of gunshot wounds. One man was detained at the scene and is being questioned as the investigation continues.
