City of Alameda to Pay Consultant $19,500 to Conduct “Independent Review” of Raymond Zack Death

The City of Alameda is set to pay a consultant $195/hour, plus expenses, for about 100 hours of work, or, roughly, $19,500, to conduct what the City has previously characterized as an “independent review” of the events leading to Raymond Zack’s death on Robert Crown Memorial Beach on May 30th, 2011.

Alameda Residents May Face Higher Local Taxes to Fill Future Budget Deficits

Opening last night’s Alameda City Council discussion on the 2011-2012 budget, Assistant City Manager Lisa Goldman told Council, “We are facing $7 million to $9 million deficits for the next 5 years, absent corrective actions…These cuts [in the 2011-12 budget] will not be enough to sustain us indefinitely…Our updated forecast which you’ll see this evening shows that we will continue to spend more than we take in for the next 5 years.”

As a consequence, one of the staff recommendations was to poll Alameda residents to gauge their support local tax ballot measures to help clear the projected deficits.

Alameda City Council to Vote on Budget Tomorrow Night

At a City Council meeting tomorrow night at City Hall, Alameda City Council members will vote on a resolution adopting a capital and operating budget for the City of Alameda for the fiscal year (FY) 2011 to 2012, which begins July 1st, 2011. Documents supporting the resolution project annual budget deficits as high as $5.3 million every year from FY2011-12 through FY2015-16.

City of Alameda Secures $6.2 million in Low-income Housing Tax Credits for Conversion of Islander Motel

The City of Alameda announced yesterday that it has secured a $6.2 million allocation of low-income housing tax credits to help convert the Islander Motel into a low-income housing site. Located two blocks from the corner of Park and Central, the converted hotel will serve one and two-individual households with incomes ranging from 20% to 50% of area median income.

Alameda Fire Dispatch Phone Recordings Paint a Picture of Confusion, Equipment Failures

Telephone recordings from the Alameda County Fire dispatch center during the Raymond Zack incident paint a picture of confusion and equipment failures among first responders and responding agencies. Action Alameda News obtained a copy of the recordings from Alameda County on Tuesday, pursuant to a public records request. The City of Alameda posted a copy of the recordings to its website on Wednesday, the day after Action Alameda News received a copy. Prior to that, the City of Alameda had posted a copy of only radio transmission recordings, not telephone recordings.

Alameda City Council Approves Firefighters Contract

Last night, in a 4-1 vote, Alameda City Council approved a three-year contract between the City and the International Association of Firefighters Local 689. The contract begins retroactively effective January 3, 2010 and runs until June 29, 2013.

Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter Get Their Shot

Yesterday, the Alameda Police Department announced that the City of Alameda has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter and the Humane Society of Alameda that would allow the two groups to transfer operation of the Alameda Animal Shelter to a non-profit.
