Summer Sailstice Moves to Encinal Yacht Club in Alameda This Year

Summer Sailstice, a global celebration of sailing that began in 2001 and takes place annually on the solstice, has moved this year from San Francisco’s Treasure Island to the Encinal Yacht Club, on the island of Alameda. Sailstice takes place this coming Saturday, June 18th.

Through the event’s website, participants can search for boats that have signed up across five continents and find or join a crew. (Technically, in the southern hemisphere, it takes place during winter, on the shortest day of the year.)

John Arndt, a publisher and lifelong sailor who founded the event, told Action Alameda News, “For 2011 Summer Sailstice decided to pull up the tent pegs and move to Alameda for a couple of reasons. Despite many positives (great anchorage, central location, etc.) and five great years on Treasure Island, the weather risk of summer winds and chills sometimes made it difficult to relax and enjoy the setting. The attraction of the protected waters of the Alameda estuary, the enthusiastic support of two very active yacht clubs, the Encinal Yacht Club and Oakland Yacht Club and the huge sailing community that lives or keeps boats on the Pacific island of Alameda made it a terrific alternative. Both clubs have very active sailing memberships and are very well known by Bay Area sailors.”

Mr. Arndt also thanked Mike Scheck at the Encinal Yacht Club for organizing the event. Attendees can expect free entertainment, free sailboat rides, and a chance to see an America’s Cup yacht (USA 76) on site. At 1:10:05 p.m. – local solar noon – organizers will fire a cannon to signal the sun’s passing overhead, and organizers encourage all boaters to sound their horn in unison. Several dozen Bay-area sailors have signed up as event participants.

The Encinal Yacht Club is located at 1251 Pacific Marina, in Alameda. Take Atlantic Avenue to Triumph Drive to Pacific Marina. Shore-side entertainment runs from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Admission is free.
