Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter Get Their Shot

Yesterday, the Alameda Police Department announced that the City of Alameda has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter and the Humane Society of Alameda that would allow the two groups to transfer operation of the Alameda Animal Shelter to a non-profit.

According to a statement, the two groups have until November 1, 2011 to transfer the shelter to a “fiscally sustainable non-profit organization.” Earlier this month, City staff had presented Alameda City Council with the stark choice of closing the shelter, or eliminating nine police officers.

According to Alameda police, the MOU was approved on Friday, June 17th by City Manager John Russo, Carmen Lasar, Humane Society of Alameda President and Nancy Evans Bianchi, President of Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter.

At a special Alameda City Council meeting set for 7:01 p.m. tonight, Council will vote to approve the MOU.

The City will continue to use donations to the shelter, and police department operating budget funds to carry the operation through to November 1, 2011.
