United States Coast Guard Opens New Interagency Operations Center on Yerba Buena Island

Earlier this week, the United States Coast Guard, Eleventh Coast Guard District, opened a new Interagency Operations Center on Yerba Buena Island in San Francisco. In a prepared statement, Vice Admiral Manson K. Brown, commander of the Coast Guard’s Pacific Area and Coast Guard Defense Force, said, “This Interagency Operations Center – IOC for short – allows us to bring together federal, state and local stakeholders to improve information sharing and tactical coordination.”

The new center incorporates the Coast Guard’s “Rescue 21” communications system, which was created to “better locate mariners in distress and save lives and property at sea.” A fact sheet on Rescue 21 states that it “enables the Coast Guard to execute all its missions – especially its search and rescue mission – with greater agility and efficiency.”

The IOC is housed in a 14,000 square foot building with two floors. The first floor is designed to host multiple public safety agencies. The second floor hosts the 1,500 square foot Command Center watch floor, and has restricted access with a SECRET classification; it also provides space in the server room to support information technology equipment from other agencies.

Representative Nancy Pelosi was on hand for the ribbon cutting ceremony.
