Coast Guard Celebrates 221st Anniversary Today

The United States Cost Guard celebrates its 221st anniversary today, including events on Coast Guard Island, home to Coast Guard Base Support Unit (BSU) Alameda, and the Pacific Area Commander.

Coast Guard Day activities at BSU Alameda, primarily for Coast Guard families and their guests, run from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Billed as a “total carnival experience,” celebrating year 2011 as “the year of the military family,” the event will include a petting zoo, a dunk tank, face painting, a beer garden, and live music as well as DJs.

At 11:30 a.m. there will be a presentation to Alameda Mayor Marie Gilmore by USCG Rear Admiral Joseph Castillo, Commander of the 11th Coast Guard District. The Alameda Fire and Police departments will be represented as well.
