Alameda Municipal Power to Report on West-end Undergrounding Project

Next Monday, at 7:00 p.m., the Alameda Public Utilities Board will receive an informational report from Alameda Municipal Power (AMP) staff on the history of efforts in Alameda to move overhead aerial electrical utility wires to underground structures, known as “undergrounding,” and on the status of underground utility district number 31, the current effort to underground aerial utility wires along Webster Street and on intersecting avenues.

Recent efforts to underground utility wires date back to at least 2004 when Alameda City Council approved the boundaries of the current project areas.

In recent weeks, neighbors living along the avenues near Webster Street have complained that they are being forced to pay, at a time they can least afford it, to underground the service wires for electricity, cable TV and telephone, at great expense, with no choice in the matter, and at risk of a lien registered against their property, in the name of, as residents say, the “beautification” of Webster Street.

Alameda Municipal Power has justified the undergrounding in part by saying that underground utility structures are more aesthetically pleasing to the eye, particularly along Alameda “gateway” areas such as Webster Street.

The Monday, August 15th meeting will be held at Alameda Municipal Power’s Service Center at 2000 Grand Street. AMP will make its report available on the website on Friday, August 12th, before the meeting.

In these economic times why on earth are you expecting anyone to pay for this. People have no jobs, homes lost, and you expect people to come up with money they don’t have. Something is really wrong. You have lost a grip on reality. And if this has to happen how come the citizens don’t get to vote on it at the ballot box.
