27th Annual Coastal Cleanup Day, Saturday, September 17

Saturday, September 17th is Coastal Cleanup Day. According to the California Coastal Commission, over 82,500 volunteers cleaned up more than 1.2 million pounds of trash from California waterways at last year’s event. The City of Alameda Public Works Department heads-up Alameda’s participation in the event.

Beginning at 8:30 a.m. on the 17th, the City will have staff at Shoreline Drive and Park Street to register volunteers to clean up Robert W. Crown Memorial State Beach along Shoreline Drive. The cleanup will run from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m and Alameda students should bring their community service paperwork to record their credits.

Volunteers can pre-register or become a beach captain for the event by visiting and signing up for the Coastal Cleanup Day Crown Beach location, or by calling (888) 327-2757, and selecting option two.

Participants should wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes and bring a reusable water bottle and reusable buckets or bags, and gloves to minimize waste generated from cleanup efforts.

According to the City of Alameda, nearly 700 volunteers worked last year to clean up the Alameda shoreline and remove over 3,000 pounds of debris.
