Alameda Municipal Power Undergrounding Update October 17th

Alameda Municipal Power will give an update to the public and the Public Utilities Board on Underground Utility District #31 On October 17th, at 7:00 p.m. at Alameda City Hall Council Chambers. The district covers the area along Webster Street and nearby addresses on cross streets.

The undergrounding effort has been controversial as far back in time as 2008, when Action Alameda News received complaints from residents in the Gold Coast Neighborhood.

More recently, residents affected by the Webster Street undergrounding district have complained about paying for the “beautification” of Webster Street.

Alameda Municipal Power says that owners affected by the Webster Street district will receive a letter shortly about the upcoming meeting and that the staff report for the meeting will be published in advance at

Undergrounding has been controversial since it started in the 1980s. I cannot think of single thing except trees, that can do more to improve the appearance of a neighborhood than undergrounding. It seems expensive up front, but in the long run, it pays off. I cannot wait for it to happen in my neighborhood.

Speaking w/a long time West End resident[our poet laureate] @the annual San Lorenzo Ruiz banquet last night, I learned that, when utility undergrounding was done in the [wealthier]East End/Fernside, the city did not ask the residents to pay as much as the West End is being asked to pay. Seems kinda backwards, doesn’t it?
