Update on Alameda Magnet Schools Tonight

The Alameda Unified School District Board of Trustees is expected to receive an update tonight on progress the district is making on developing a so-called “magnet schools” program in Alameda.

An update provided to the media yesterday by Kerri Lonergan, Superintendent’s Assistant, indicates there are six working proposals under consideration, based on submissions in response to the district’s request for proposals earlier this year:

1. 21st Century Learning at Bay Farm
2. Math, Science, Technology with Integration of Music at Earhart
3. K-2 Family Support at Earhart
4. 6-12 School at Encinal
5. Global Education Through the Arts (magnet school)
6. School of Sustainability, Arts, and Science (magnet school)

The proposal teams are due to submit their final proposals this Thursday, December 1st, and district staff will make a recommendation to the Board of Trustees on January 10th, 2012 based on a scoring mechanism. The public has opportunity to comment on the proposals tonight and January 10th before a final vote scheduled for January 24th.

Funding for the initiatives comes from a parcel tax passed earlier this year, raising $84 million over 7 years for the school district, and which raised taxes for the average homeowner by 65%. The new tax appears on tax bills issued in September, and for which the first installment is due next week, December 10th.

The Board of Trustees meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. tonight in Council Chambers at Alameda City Hall.
