Michael D’Orazi Named Alameda Fire Chief

The City of Alameda announced today that Michael D’Orazi has been named Chief of the Alameda Fire Department.

In a widely anticipated move, City Manager John Russo made the appointment effective today, December 19th.

Mr. D’Orazi had retired from the Alameda Fire Department in 2007. He came out of retirement earlier this year to serve as Interim Fire Chief, although some residents have questioned his credentials for the role.

In a prepared statement from Alameda City Hall, Alameda Fire Department Captain Domenick Weaver, President of the Alameda Firefighters Association, praised D’Orazi’s appointment.

The Alameda Firefighters Association spent heavily in last year’s election to elect Mayor Marie Gilmore and Councilmembers Lena Tam and Rob Bonta, who brought in John Russo after firing Interim City Manager Ann Marie Gallant almost exactly one year ago, on December 28th, 2010.

In April of this year, Action Alameda News published a series of photographs showing the Alameda Firefighters Association President, Political Director, and then-Oakland City Attorney John Russo posing for pictures at an election night 2010 victory party for Gilmore, Tam and Bonta.
