Under a three year contract that runs to January, 2015, Alameda’s new City Attorney, Janet Kern, will be paid a salary of $190,000 per year plus benefits.
Ms. Kern comes to Alameda from San Jose, where she was Deputy Executive Director for the redevelopment agency there. She was City Attorney for the City of Morgan Hill from 2006 to 2008 and was Senior Associate Counsel for the City of San Jose for eight years. She received a J. D. degree from the
University of Utah College of Law in 1984.
Her contract, which Alameda City Council approved earlier this week, provides for 25 paid vacation days per year, participation in the state public employees pension plan, medical coverage, disability benefits, dental coverage, and minimum car allowance of $250 per month. The City of Alameda will also pay her California State Bar and other professional dues up to $2,500 per year, and the cost of continuing education classes for Kern to keep her bar membership.
The contract provides that the City will pay Kern four months salary if she should be terminated for cause.
What did the former city attorney get paid?
Am I the only person who finds this salary and benefit package excessive?
When you translate the annual salary into an hourly rate, it boggles the
mind. There is a huge difference between the lowest paid and the more
highly paid folks in the city. There is a huge difference between the
average income of an Alamedan and these guys… How long can we prop them up?
I mean no offense to anyone.
