City to Create New Department to Manage Alameda Point

At Tuesday evening’s Alameda City Council meeting, staff will recommend the creation of a new department to manage and implement development of Alameda Point. The action is necessitated by the February 1st elimination of redevelopment agencies.

With the eradication of redevelopment agencies, the City of Alameda became the successor agency to the Community Improvement Commission of the City of Alameda, the local agency. The Commission (CIC) was party, with the City of Alameda, to a joint powers authority agency, the Alameda Reuse and Redevelopment Authority (ARRA) and now, with the CIC gone, only the City of Alameda is represented. City staff are recommending that the City of Alameda accept assignment from ARRA of its rights, responsibilities and obligations, including rights and obligations pertaining to the former Naval Air Station Alameda under the Lease in Furtherance of Conveyance from the U.S. Navy.

As a result, staff are recommending to Alameda City Council that the City create a new department, as yet un-named, to manage the development of Alameda Point.

According to the staff report, there are no financial impacts to the City of Alameda or the ARRA as a result of accepting the recommendations.
