Yesterday, the Alameda Unified School District announced that it has cancelled its annual Open House due to ongoing conflicts with the Alameda Education Association, the bargaining unit that represents Alameda’s teachers.
Representing local teachers, the union took the position that a March 2010 memorandum of understanding forbid the District from holding open house this year; the District did not say specifically how so.
In its announcement the District said that it chose to not spend money to litigate the Open House issue in arbitration and defend itself against union charges of engaging in unfair labor practices. Instead, school officials want to work on resolving the contract issues over class size and the school calendar.
