Public Meetings on Single-Use Bag Reduction Ordinance

Recently, the Alameda County Waste Management Authority (ACWMA) adopted an ordinance to reduce the use of plastic bags provided by stores. The City of Alameda almost opted out of the program, but, in the end, did not. Now, the City of Alameda Public Works Department will hold two public meetings on the matter.

Under the ordinance, retailers may not provide single-use plastic bags, but may provide a recycled content paper bag or reusable bag at a minimum 10 cent charge per bag; the goal of the ordinance is to reduce waste going to landfill, and minimize trash found in storm drains and the San Francisco Bay.

The dates and times of the two public meetings are as follows:

Tuesday, March 27, 2012, 7:00 p.m.
Mastick Senior Center, Social Hall, 1155 Santa Clara Avenue

Thursday, March 29, 2012, 7:00 p.m.
City Hall, Third Floor Council Chambers, 2263 Santa Clara Avenue
