City of Alameda to Receive $271,135 Federal Grant for Wildland Firefighting Equipment

On April 17th, Alameda City Council will consider a staff recommendation to appropriate $54,227 in matching funds from the City’s general fund to secure a $271,135 grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighter Grant Program for the Replacement of of Wildland Firefighting Personal Protective Equipment and Firefighter Survival Training.

The appropriation of funds from the City of Alameda’s budget is necessary under the federal grant program which requires the local agency to provide 20% of the amount requested for equipment and training.

According to the report, the Alameda Fire Department has been awarded more than $3.3 million in funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in the past 10 years.

In the past three years, Alameda firefighters have provided mutual aid to other cities for 11 wild fires.

The money will be used for firefighter equipment and training particular to fighting wildland fires, and is imperative if the Alameda Fire Department is to be able to provide mutual aid to other agencies fighting wildland fires in the future.
