Washington Elementary School to Become Maya Lin

Elementary level Washington School hosted a closing celebration event yesterday, after which the facility will be known the Maya Lin School, pursuing an arts magnet curriculum.

Washington School was a perennial poor performer on standardized tests; the California Department of Education has it listed as a school at risk for entering Program Improvement for the 2012-2013 school year.

The school has also been on the list of Open Enrollment Act “low achieving” schools every year since the law came into effect in 2010. Under the act, parents whose home school is on the list have the right to enroll their children in a higher-achieving school.

The proposal for the magnet school curriculum for Washington School described the program this way: “Arts integration provides students a structure to learn in multi-sensory ways and creates a common language throughout the school that removes cultural and socio economic barriers. The study of the arts develops self confidence, expression and identity as it encourages multiple perspectives, not one right answer.”

The facility has been renamed after Maya Lin, an American artist and architect known for her work in sculpture and landscape art. She is best known for creating the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial in Washington, D.C., and the Civil Rights Memorial in Montgomery, Alabama.
