Due to an early morning fire at a building under construction right next to the West Oakland BART station, BART between the East Bay and Oakland is shut down.
According to BART, at about 2:15 a.m., a fire broke out at a senior housing building under construction near the station, and spread to BART property, damaging track equipment.
BART hopes to restore transbay service by this afternoon, single-tracking the trains, but the agency is providing no guarantees.
Traffic backups in the East Bay, as commuters switch to their automobiles, are massive.
BART provides a list of casual carpool locations here. Ferry service info is available here.
