Teachers, District, Agree on Class Sizes, Calendar for Next Two Years

The Alameda Unified School District announced yesterday that the Alameda Education Association (AEA) ratified an agreement that sets class sizes and the school year calendar for the next two years.

However, negotiations on the entire teachers’ contract will continue.

The agreement allows the district to increase K-3 class sizes above a 25:1 ratio in case the district receives less state funding, and until the entire contract is settled. It also forbids the union from striking over class size while negotiations continue.

For the 2012 to 2013 school year, AEA and AUSD have agreed to a school calendar year; for the 2013 to 2014 school year, they have agreed to agree to a calendar by January 1, 2013.

August 27th, 2012, will be the first day of school for the upcoming year; June 7th, 2013 will be the last day of school. The calendar provides for 180 school days, plus two work days and three staff development days for 185 contract days for AEA.

The district board is expected to ratify this latest agreement at its regular meeting on June 26.

Oh boy, here we go again. Class size is irrelevant if you have a bad teacher. System protects bad teachers, so without the structural change we will have the same mess, a lot of hope without any results. Adults negotiate for themselves not for students. Class size is a cover up for system which is proven NOT TO WORK.
