City Agrees to Share Swim Center Costs with School District for Another Year

At last night’s council meeting, Alameda City Council approved a one-year agreement with the Alameda Unified School District to share the operating and maintenance costs for the Emma Hood and Encinal Swim Centers. The anticipated cost to the City of Alameda is $147,500.

The agreement has each agency assuming fifty percent of all costs to operate the swim centers, including utilities and maintenance. The Alameda Unified School District is responsible for capital repairs and the City of Alameda is responsible for equipment repairs, custodial services and maintenance, such as chemicals and supplies.

A city staffer answering council member questions explained that the funding budgeted in the agreement is sufficient to safely operate the pool and that no further significant repairs were anticipated.

In addition to the Emma Hood and Encinal swim centers, the City of Alameda owns the outdoor pools at Franklin and Lincoln parks, but assigns operation of those pools to a private non-profit organization.
