Equal Access to Fertility Bill Sponsored by Alameda Resident Passes in California Senate

Yesterday, the California State Senate voted 26 to 10 to approve a bill that ensures equal access to fertility services for all women. The bill was conceived by Alameda resident and candidate for the Health Care District Board, Leland Traiman.

The bill clarifies existing law to ensure that single women, and women in same-sex relationships, can use fresh sperm from known donors with whom they have not had sexual intercourse to access certain fertility procedures that are less expensive and more effective than others.

Fearing liability under existing law, some doctors force same-sex female couples, and single women, to use more expensive artificial conception procedures with a lower chance of success.

Assemblymember Nancy Skinner, a Democrat representing the 14th Assembly District served as author of the bill. The bill was co-sponsored by Equality California (EQCA) and the National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR.)

After a routine vote in the Assembly to reconcile any amendments made in the Senate, the bill will go to the Governor’s desk to be signed into law.

The bill is AB 2356.
