City of Alameda Election Results (November 2012)

Updated 8:11 a.m., Wednesday, November 7th…

A newcomer to the Alameda Unified School District Board of Trustees contest, Jon Murphy rose past incumbent Ron Mooney in yesterday’s election, but it wasn’t enough to secure him one of three seats on the board.

Murphy ranked fourth in a field of nine candidates, and Ron Mooney ranked sixth. Incumbent Niel Tam ranked third, keeping his seat on the board, and incumbent Trish Spencer came in first with 21.34 percent of the vote.

Spencer, Murphy and Barbara Kahn had the backing of the Alameda Education Association, the local teachers’ union. Kahn too secured a seat on the board.

Late last night, as poll data made it clear that she would keep her seat, Spencer told Action Alameda News, “It’s been a long four years. I really want to thank the community our teachers our employees our parents for their support. Now we’re going to move forward to serve every child to the best of our ability as a team.”

Former City of Alameda Councilmember Tony Daysog ranked second in the council race, with 18.05 percent of the vote, behind Marilyn Ezzy Ashcraft, with 25.09 percent. Alameda Health Care District Director Stewart Chen came in third. He’s expected to take the seat vacated by Rob Bonta, after he resigns the seat to take the California 18th Assembly District seat he looks to have one, with 50.79 percent of the vote.

Alameda Hospital Board
Michael McCormick, husband to Alameda County Supervisor Wilma Chan, and Jordan Battani, both incumbents, kept their seats on the City of Alameda Health Care District Board of Directors. Tracy Jensen, who previously served on the Alameda Unified School District board, ranked third.

Newcomer Leland Traiman, who ranked fourth, told Action Alameda News on Monday, before the election, that he fully expected the incumbents to be re-elected, because few voters pay much attention to races near the bottom of the ballot. “I raised issues of conflict of interest and poor oversight by the board because I did not want those who were doing such a dreadfully poor job to get a free ride,” he said.

Measure A1, the Oakland Zoo parcel tax, and Measure B1, the Alameda County transportation sales tax increase, both look to have failed, with 62.69 percent and 65.54 percent of voters in favor. The measures need a two-thirds majority to pass.
